Mostly the name and the price. Strip both away, and the materials and parts sit in the same category: solid brass rather than plastic, German-engineered nibs and refills, high-gloss lacquer and precious metals, used of ion-plating. 

That's not a criticism of legacy brands. Heritage plays a great role in the products they offer. Yet the heritage often comes with hidden costs of decades of retail presence and margin, made to feed the illusion of access to something special.

Heritage is worth a lot for some buyers. It’s not what is included in the Scriveiner’s price tag.

Our nibs and refills come from a German manufacturer also trusted by several established pen houses, so the writing experience isn't a cheaper imitation of what a legacy pen offers — it's built to the same engineering standard. What differs is everything wrapped around the nib: the brand history, the retail markup, the name stamped on the clip. The part that actually touches the page is where we chose to spend.

Because for us, the price was never meant to reflect what people would pay for a name — it was meant to reflect what the pen actually costs to make well. Charging £400 for the same materials would just mean we'd built another version of the thing we set out not to be.

We built Scriveiner e-commerce first specifically so at the early stages we could skip the retail layer — boutiques, distributors, in-store staff — and put that budget into the design development, hundreds of prototypes and source the best materials and writing part as possible.

So, in a nutshell, we won’t charge more because we don’t want to.

Longevity comes from the materials and the finish, not the name on the box. Solid brass doesn't degrade the way resin can, and the ion-plating and lacquer finishes are built to resist daily wear rather than just look good on day one. The same nib standard used in far more expensive pens performs the same way here.

A pen from a legacy house isn't more durable for being expensive — it's expensive, and separately, durable. We built for the second part without paying for the first.

Some of that value is tied to brand history built up over a century, and that's not something we can manufacture at any price. What we can offer is a pen built to be used and kept for its own sake, rather than one you're buying partly as an investment or a name to pass down.

If resale value specifically matters to you, a legacy name will hold that better. If you want a pen that performs the same and costs a fraction as much, that's where we come in — just worth knowing which one you're actually optimising for before you decide.

It depends what the gift is meant to say. If the goal is the recognisable name itself, sitting in a familiar box, no pen at this price will replicate that.
